Beware of Encore Products August 23, 2010 ChrisB (Los Angeles) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
First of all, watch out for products made by Encore. They installed a hidden registration program on my system without my knowledge, which seems to pop up every few days and automatically connects to the internet. Not only that but I get a warning message from my firewall protection that their site is trying to connect to my computer WITHOUT MY PERMISSION. Since they offer no details about what the hell they're doing, I've been blocking their program. Finally, I hunted down anything that said "encore_reg" on my computer and tried to delete it. Of course, access was denied, and so I've got this freakin' program on my system now that I can't get rid of! Unbelievable! I looked in task manager and apparently this registration program runs continually in the background. WTF?? If there's any point in reviewing the game after that, let me just say it sucks. At least half the time the voices blank out and everything is way too tiny (this is REALLY bad when playing cribbage or canasta). Don't trust Encore and don't buy their products!
Surprisingly Bad August 22, 2010 Mas2Cents 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I was so happy with the older versions of Hoyle games that I really thought this one would be good, but it is HORRIBLE. Navigation is way worse that the older ones. I have a really hard time telling what Hoyle thinks they've improved in this version. Definitely not the games. Don't waste your money on this one... get (or keep using) the older version.
Mostly useless August 10, 2010 Eric G. Wilkinson (Eugene, OR United States) I got this for Spades, Five Card Draw Poker, Seven Card Stud Poker, and to learn Texas Hold'em. The Spades game works great. But all the Poker games use CASINO rules, and not Friday-night-game/casual rules. There doesn't appear to be a way to change this anywhere in the software. I already have some Hoyle casino software which already has these casino versions of these games in them, so there's no good reason to limit the player in this card games package to only casino rules. Also, there are some games which are simply unplayable due to bad graphics, like Tarot; the cards in that game are small and blurry. Uninstalled and returned.
Unbelievably Bad... August 6, 2010 ChurchLaydee 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
It's Hoyle, it's gotta be good - right? WRONG! The programmers should all be fired for letting this software ever hit the market in its current state. Most games are completely unplayable, cards are way too small (even in the joke-able LARGE state), overlaying of scores/information over cards, cribbage board useless - no way to see pegs, etc, etc, etc. The cons could fill up this whole page. If you like snazzy backgrounds and don't care about actually being able to play any of the games, you might like it. Totally fubar'd this game.
Frustrating - July 30, 2010 Nancy Jacobsen (Monrovia, CA USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have had Hoyle Card Games and Hoyle Puzzles on my computer for years. I was using the Sierra 2001 games and they were so easy to use. However,I misplaced my programs so when I recently purchased a new computer with Windows 7, I thought I would just buy new Hoyle games. What a waste of $40! I have already uninstalled the card games and the puzzle games are going off today.
On the Solitaire card games, the cards are so small I cannot see them even with my nose on the monitor. They also overlap each other so tightly that you cannot see the "suit" marks. I love to play Cribbage, but who wants to play with no pegs? You have to play so many games to earn points and then you can buy the pegs. Ridculous!
This was giving me a nervous tic. Yesterday, I finally found my old games and I will thankfully install them today. I am sorry I wasted the money. It was an expensive lesson that just because it is new, doesn't necessarily mean it is better.
