Opening with the creaky sounds of a ship at sea, Sailing charts the funk-punk waters the San Francisco Bay area band returns to again and again. It's all here: the acerbic humor, Les Claypool's gurgling fretless bass lines, Larry LaLonde's seasick metal guitar, and Tim Alexander's Bill Bruford-inspired syncopation. The narrator of "Sgt. Baker" aims to "rape your personality," while the reapers of the "American Life" live out their dreams "residing in a cardboard box." Tom Waits makes a cameo on the funky back-alley tale "Tommy the Cat," and the protagonist of "Jerry Was a Race Car Driver" has "too many cold beers one night" and "wraps himself around a telephone pole." Primus concert fave "Those Damned Blue Collar Tweakers" helps round out this bizarre prog-punk masterpiece. --James Rotondi

Classic Primus August 17, 2010 Darthcasey (Midsouthwest, USA) Classic, nostalgic Primus, quintessential listening for fans of . . . whatever genre of music this is. Alternative rock? Maybe, but not definitely. Grunge? No, though this album came out during the Nirvana explosion. Metal? Definitely not, though the solo in "Those Damned Blue Collar Tweakers" shows an influence. That goes to show the creativity of this trio, refusing to conform to a certain classification. Regardless of genre definition, this album rocks. "Jerry was a Race Car Driver" stands out to me as the crowning achievement, although a friend of mine - and fan of "Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey" - would argue that "Tommy the Cat" takes the title. FYI: check out Woodstock 94's compilation either on video or disc to hear a superior version of "Tweakers."
The Kind of Music Primus Plays Is..... Primus August 7, 2010 Iris Artechi Les Claypool once auditioned for bassist of Metallica after Cliff Burton died, he didn't get picked, but he was told that he was "too good" and that he should "do his own thing"... and that's just what Primus is!! You can't label this album in one genre of music. The closest you can get is a kind of hicktastic, goofy, demented, funk metal. And i think it's pretty unique that the bass is right up in your face instead of the support. The riffs will get in your head along with the weird lyrics and stay there. Easily Primus's best song is "Jerry Was a Race Car Driver" it's goofy and the only reason you have never seen anyone try to follow in Les Claypool's footsteps is that none are as daring and many lack dexterity as Les. You might be a fan after listening to this once...
Crown Jewel June 16, 2010 David Oehler (SFV, California) Very vital in my formative years, Sailing The Seas Of Cheese in my opinion, is Primus' definitive CD. If you're new and unsure of where to start with Primus, start here. Sounds as fresh and as imaginative as it did fifteen years ago. Enjoy.
So this is Primus, I likus March 14, 2010 M. Barrett (Idaho) I've liked Primus for a long time but for whatever reason I never got one of their albums. So I asked a friend and this is the one he recommended. And what a good choice. There are some classics I've heard before and some new ones I wish I had. Primus is not for everyone but if you like to wonder off the beaten path I would recommend it. Select Tracks: "Jerry was a Racecar Driver", "American Life", "Tommy the Cat", "Fish On".
Best Primus Album Ever?! January 28, 2010 G. Griffith (Lafayette, CO United States) I love this alubum, and have loved it since the day it came out, the first time I bought this album! Some guy said this album was the "first Primus flop" in Amazon reviews here and he couldn't be more wrong. This album has "Jerry was a Racecar Driver", "Here they Come", "Tommy the Cat"...and pretty much every song on it rocks some serious Primus funk. I love this album...
